2016 ends with plenty of good cheer!
Match 1 Vs Harrogate 2 Won 4-0
Match 2 Vs Sheffield 2 Won 3-2
Match 3 Vs Leeds Adel 1 Won 2-0
On a beautiful December day in South Yorkshire the U14 boys arrived in Doncaster with the sole focus of securing promotion out of Division 4, having narrowly missed out last time by a single goal.
A full squad bolstered by Timmy and Alex (now u14 veterans) set themselves up for the first game with the familiar attacking formation of a high floating Harvey and Will ensuring the Harrogate defence were kept alert. The early part of the game saw Hull struggling to get into their stride with players being drawn to the ball and sometimes getting in each others way but with some consistent play down the right hand side through Sam and Ollie it wasn’t long before Will Tyson struck home the first goal which seemed to settle the team. Hull then began to dominate the midfield with Kosta, Josh and Sam helping to turn over the ball from Harrogate 16 yard and free hits to keep the pressure on, whilst winning a couple of short corners in the process. It was just a matter of time before the next goal came courtesy of Harvey and then it was a case of scoring in turn as Will struck a third before Harvey finished off the game with a firm strike. The final score could have been more but it ended 4-0 with another clean sheet and Travis being barely tested.
A couple of games off (and a bit of downtime hustling at the pool table) and the team were back on the pitch to face Sheffield who they had previously beaten 3-0 the last time they met. However this time it was a different encounter which saw goals being exchanged at each end in quick succession in the early parts of the game. Will scored Hull’s first only to have it cancelled out with Sheffield’s first real attack. Will then put Hull back on top but the team did not control the game and seemed to panic on the ball giving away possession despite some great defensive tackling and positional play from Tim, Matty P and Matty N. Hull had to defend a couple of short corners and struggled to keep an eye on the Sheffield forwards who eventually evened out the score with a low strike into Travis’s goal. With the game even and the clock ticking the team dug in and opportunities came at each end. Travis being called into action a few times with the best save being a firm save-clear from a low right-side strike. Both Coaches seemed to have settle for a draw until the drama unveiled with a late award of a short corner to Hull. Once players had gathered around the D, a solid push out from Matty P to Sam saw a great strike low into the Sheffield goal to secure the win and spark a round of cheers from the parent supporters.
The final game against Leeds Adel was less dramatic and more matter of fact as Harvey quickly set the scene with a calmly taken goal beating 3 Leeds defenders to slot home a fantastic individual goal. Hull then began to dominate the midfield with Sam seeing a lot of the ball in midfield and Matty P being allowed some rare time beyond the half way line courtesy of some good cover play from Josh, Tim and Matty N. The lead was soon doubled after ‘pass of the day’ from Sam through to Will who fired home to set Hull up for a third win. The match continued with some solid play in midfield from Alex, Kosta and Stan who held firm winning the ball and always looking for passes out to team mates. Although Hull could have pushed harder for some more goals they stood firm and saw the game out for their seventh clean sheet of the campaign.
Three wins from Three games sees the Team promoted upto Division 3 which is a great place to start the New Year as we begin to compete with the stronger teams from the Yorkshire region.
Man of the Match, as voted for by the players this week was Will Tyson for his strong attacking supportive play and constant running both in attack and defence (oh and not to mention the Five Goals!!)
A big thanks to Dave T our Coach and Umpire who was running on pure adrenalin (and a bacon butty !) and to Debbie for organising the squad again. A fantastic end to 2016!
